Map Info
Spain during the Moorish conquest. It's always surprising how much of Spain was influenced by Islam, how many of the names are taken directly from Islamic words. Original is ink and illustration marker on watercolor paper, 24 x 24. Prints are available at full size, but also scaled down for ease of framing.

Artist's Note
I try to find script styles, or fonts, that suit the subject material of the map. Sadly, no such script existed, so I had to invent an entire alphabet for this project. Actually, I had to invent two. The border is inspiried by the tiled mosaic work of the time, which is some of the best the world has ever seen. This was the third or fourth time I swore I would never attempt a geometric border.
