Map Info
Inpired by the story of Thaney, told through song by Malinky, the first woman to be made a saint after sexual assault. The border consists of the full lyrics to the song. In an unexpectedly cheerful plot twist, she's not murdered and gets to live happily by herself, with her child, and not be bothered by anyone. Original is ink and illustration marker on watercolor paper, 22 x 30. Prints are available true to size, but also scaled down to traditional sizes for ease of framing.
Note: If printed in smaller sizes, words may not be readable.
Artist's Note
This was my first attempt to Map a Song, which involved researching the placement of all the 12th century castles in this small part of northern England. The specific moment captured depicts a very pregnant Thaney being put to see in a boat "without sail or row or rudder" to die (after attempts at stoning her fail), but "cradled by five thousand fishes" she safely reaches Culross Church on the Isle of May, and delivers a healthy baby boy. When I chose this moment, it somehow eluded me that this would entail drawing a truly huge number of "fishes."
